Is Libertarianism Compatible With Christianity?

A friend sent me a link to a newspaper column celebrating the supposed ascendance of libertarianism among the hoi polloi.

“It is clear,” the author wrote, “that there are certain areas where an increasing portion of Americans are adapting more libertarian views and simply want the government to leave them alone and allow them to freely live their lives.”

He cited as examples same-sex marriage and drug legalization.

“People have generally come to the conclusion,” he asserted, “that they don’t really care to whom one is attracted or what consenting adults do behind closed doors.”

He also predicted that “the next libertarian wave to wash across the national consciousness will be drug legalization.”

Where “the prohibitionist” errs, he asserted, is in “the failure to recognize that since one owns the right to his own life, his body is as much his property, if not more so, than the clothes he wears or the change in his pocket, and he is free to utilize it as he sees fit.”

Well, I do no dispute that support has increased in recent years for both homosexual marriage and decriminalization of drug use. The polls suggests as much.

But that doesn’t make it right.

For the Word of God declares: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”

Indeed, there is a libertarian argument to be made for seemingly every evil under the sun.

Take pedophilia: The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) group thinks there nothing wrong with a grown man being sexual attracted to a pre-pubescent boy.

In fact, the main goal of the pedophile rights group, which was headed for years by libertarian Joe Powers, is to “repeal age of consent laws that make it a crime for adults to have sex with minors.”

We see a similar move to “normalize” polygamy; to confer upon such multi-spouse unions the same right to marry as homosexual couples. The movement was given a huge boost last year by a federal district court judge in Utah who ruled that the state’s law banning polygamous households violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

The legal challenge was brought by the polygamous “family” featured on the TLC reality show “Sister Wives.” Parents magazine, which should not be mistaken as pro-family, finds the show “very redeeming.” Perhaps the best part of the show, according to Parents, is “its subtle Libertarian message.”

Not even incest is out of bounds for libertarians. Just last year, in fact, the German Ethics Council, a government body, recommended that the country’s laws banning incest between adult brothers and sisters should be abolished.

“The fundamental right of adult siblings to sexual self-determination,” trumps “the abstract idea of protection of the family,” the council declared. That line of reasoning expressed “a libertarian ideal of sexual autonomy,” noted The Week magazine.

The same kind of unGodly reasoning informs prevailing libertarian views on such issues as abortion, euthanasia, drugs and prostitution – that our bodies are our property and we can do with them what we will.

Indeed, Murray Rothbard, who according to the Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Political Thought played a leading intellectual role in the development of modern libertarianism, said that if a mother-to-be decides she doesn’t want the human life growing in her womb, “then the fetus becomes a parasitic ‘invader’ of her person, and the mother has the perfect right to expel this invader from her domain.”

Jack Kevorkian, the proponent of physician-assisted suicide who sent more than 100 souls to an early grave, never pronounced himself a “libertarian,” but he certainly was embraced by the libertarian community.

That included Mary J. Ruwart, a leading candidate for the 2008 Libertarian Party presidential nomination, who actually contacted Kevorkian in 1993 to assist her sister Martie to take her life. “Martie was a person for whom Dr. Kevorkian really was the only option,” said sister Mary.

The libertarian Cato Institute is one of the foremost advocates of drug legalization, not just for marijuana, but any every and every drug.

Indeed, in 1999 testimony to Congress, Cato’s David Boaz argued that “(t)he long federal experiment in prohibition of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs has given us unprecedented crime and corruption combined with a manifest failure to stop the use of drugs or reduce their availability to crime.”

But libertarian Boaz and other drug-legalization advocates don’t get it. “Drugs like marijuana and cocaine are not dangerous because they are illegal,” as Joe Califano, the one time chairman of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, explained. “They are illegal because they are dangerous.”

That is borne out by data from the Centers for Disease Control, which indicates that deaths from drug overdoses have risen steadily over the past two decades. Among people 25 to 64 years old, drug overdoses actually cause more deaths than motor vehicle crashes.

The libertarian case for legal prostitution also is morally bankrupt. It is based on the notion that sex for money is a “victimless crime;” that a woman should be free to sell her body without government meddling.

Never mind a study from the Netherlands, where prostitution is legal, which reported that 60 percent of women in legal prostitution had been physically assaulted and 40 percent had been coerced into legal prostitution.

Kill our unborn babies. Take our own lives. Enslave ourselves to drugs. Sell and buy sex. All that is okay under tenets of libertarianism.

But the Word of God says different.

“Do you not know,” the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christian faithful in Corinth, “that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?”

Indeed, we were all, everyone, bought at a price. And, therefore, we are to glorify God in body and spirit.

Is Professed Christian Obama a Believer or a Deceiver?

Joshua DuBois, former head of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, appeared yesterday on MSNBC’s “UP with Steve Kornacki,” during which he defended President Obama’s profoundly insulting anti-Christian remarks at last Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast in the Nation’s Capital.

The president admonished Christians not to think their faith somehow different than the faith that has produced ISIL (and al Qaeda and Boko Haram and Abu Sayyaf and Hamas and Hezbollah and all too many other Islamic terrorist groups).

“Remember,” spake Obama, “during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ.”

And lest the more than three-quarters of us in this country who count ourselves Christ followers “get on our high horse,” as Obama put it, he reminded us that “slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.”

DuBois, whom Time Magazine in 2009 anointed Obama’s “pastor-in-chief,” maintained during his MSNBC appearance that the president spoke the gospel truth. That earned him a stinging rebuke from, of all talking heads, MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, who was guesting on Kornacki’s show alongside DuBois.

O’Donnell told Obama’s spiritual adviser that it was absurd to suggest some sort of parallel between the Crusades – the last of which was all the way back in the 15th century – and the unholy war waged today by ISIL. He also told DuBois it was ridiculous to blame Christianity for racial bigotry.

DuBois, raised in the African Methodist Episcopal church, has on a previous occasion vouched for Obama’s Christian faith. “I happen to know the president personally,” he said, “and know his heart and know he’s a believer.”

Well, if Obama is a true Christ follower, he certainly doesn’t show it. Indeed, the president “rarely goes to church and has spent just one Christmas morning of his presidency in the pews,” as reported by Politico this past December.

But it is by his fruits – his unGodly policies – that we know this president.

Indeed, Obama has given his presidential blessing to gay marriage, dismissing the warning of the Apostle Paul that neither “homosexuals, nor sodomites…will inherit the kingdom of God.”

The president also has cast his lot with the nation’s abortionists, who have slaughtered more than five million unborn children since Obama has been in the White House. The Prophet Amos declared that the Lord’s punishment awaits those that have “ripped open the woman with child.”

What particularly galls about Obama is that he represents himself as a man of faith because he selectively quotes Scripture and invokes the name of the Lord.

Well, as the Bard wrote in the “Merchant of Venice,” “The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.” And as Christ Himself advised, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father.”

Indeed, that Obama shows up each year for the National Prayer Breakfast doesn’t prove him a “believer.” No, it exposes the professed Christian as a deceiver.

Secularists Are Trying to Take Christ Out of Christmas

“Joyous Kwanzaa.” “Happy Hanukkah.” “Merry Christmas.” “Happy Ramadan.”

So proclaims the secularist “holiday” poster that greets visitors to the office building where I labor.

The building owner obviously thought the poster noncontroversial. But this Christ follower found it offensive.

Because the upcoming holiday is not about Kwanza, the seven-day afrocentric celebration created in 1965, nor Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival hardly celebrated until the 1970s, and certainly not Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting that actually takes place in June.

No, Jesus is the reason for the season.

It is the annual acknowledgement of the fulfillment two mellennia ago of the Messianic pronouncements of the prophet Isaiah seven centuries earlier:

“Unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

It is a celebration of the miraculous birth of the one whom John the Baptizer declared “The Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world.”

It is a season of thanks-giving to God for His mercy, for His grace; Who “so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

That’s what Christmas has been about since the holy-day was first celebrated in the fourth century. And since the commemoration of the birth of Christ was declared a national holiday here in the United States in 1870.

Of course, there are forces of darkness in this world that hate Christmas; that want to disassociate the holiday from Jesus Christ.

That includes American Atheists, which describes itself as “the premier organization fighting for the civil liberties of atheists and the total, absolute separation of government and religion.”

The homepage on AA’s website declares “War on Christmas.”  It depicts a little girl – actually rather demonic-looking – sitting down writing a letter in which she tells Santa Claus: “All I want for Christmas is to skip church!”

More passively hostile to Christmas are retailers that have replaced “Merry Christmas” in their advertisements with the insidious “Happy Holidays.”

That includes Barnes & Noble, Footlocker, Gap Stores (parent company of the Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy), Limited Brands (parent company of the Limited, Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret), L.L. Bean and Radio Shack.

Then there are the religiously correct workplaces that no longer allow Christmas to have a holiday to itself; that have given such dubious holidays as Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Ramadan equal billing with Christmas.

But there is a reason Christmas remains the world’s biggest religious holiday.

It is not because of all the secularist trappings of Christmas – the office parties, the shopping, the ritualistic gift-giving, the ornament-laden trees, the ostentatious lighting displays, the orgiastic meals.

No, it is because of Jesus.

It is because the Holy Spirit moves in a powerful way during the Christmas season. It is because many are convicted during their once a year visit to church.

And it is because there will be “more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents” this upcoming Christmas Day “than over ninety-nine just persons” sitting in the pews “who need no repentance.”

Will God Forgive Brittany Maynard If She Kills Herself?

It’s November 1, the day Brittany Maynard vowed to kill herself. The 29-year-old California woman says she no longer finds life worth living after being diagnosed this past spring with stage 4 glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumor.

Brittany has become the poster girl for “Compassion & Choices, ”  a so-called “end-of-life choice” advocacy organization that is fighting to increase the number of stateS with so-called “Death With Dignity” laws on the books.

The model is Oregon, the state to which Brittany relocated this past summer because her home state of California doesn’t allow physician-assisted suicide (at least for now).

Oregon is one of five states – along with Montana, Washington, New Mexico and Vermont – that allow doctors to prescribe lethal doses of medication to patients like Brittany, diagnosed with terminal illnesses, longing for a premature death.

And Compassion & Choices has campaigns underway underway in four other states to legalize euthanasia – Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts and, of course, California (so terminally ill residents like Brittany don’t have to go all the way to Oregon to kill themselves).

If the pro-euthanasia movement succeeds in nearly doubling the number of states with “Death With Dignity” laws,  it will only be a matter of time before physician-assisted suicide is routine throughout the county – like physician-assisted abortion.

Indeed, just as Planned Parenthood soft-pedals abortion as “reproductive health care,” Compassion & Choices portrays euthanasia as end-of-life “comfort and control.”

And they are shamelessly exploiting terminally ill Brittany, casting her as the face of the euthanasia movement and even setting up The Brittany Maynard Fund not to benefit her family – she and her recently-wed husband are childless – but to raise money to further Compassion & Choices’ political advocacy.

Well, as a Christ follower who this very year was a pallbearer at his 83-year-old father-in-law’s funeral, who had no moral qualms with the family’s decision not to resuscitate him when he drew his last breath, I have nothing but empathy for those who find themselves in similar situations.

But it’s one thing to allow a natural death, and quite another to actively terminate life, as in the case of euthanasia.

Indeed, God’s precious gift of life is cheapened when we send off the terminally ill, like Brittany, to a hasty death. If we accept euthanasia today for those diagnosed with six months to live, do we accept it tomorrow for anyone with a terminal illness – cancer, Alzheimer’s, whatever – no matter how far they may be from death’s door?

Is it hard to imagine Compassion & Choices one day begging the question why the “comfort and choice” of euthanasia should be limited strictly to those with terminal illnesses?

What about those of weakened mind or sinew who feel that their quality of life has so deteriorated that death would be welcome?

And why should euthanasia be restricted to adults only? What about the infant suffering from a fatal illness? Why not put the child out of his or her misery?

Because life is sacred, as the Scripture reminds.

“Do you not know,” the Apostle Paul wrote, “that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? You are not our own. You were bought with a price.”

A Suggested Halloween Date Night for Christian Couples

Michael Franzese has a powerful testimony to share. It’s about his journey on the road to perdition; during which he was transformed from a made man in the Colombo crime family to a remade man in the family of Christ.

The true-to-life tale of the Lord’s saving grace is recounted in the new documentary film, “God the Father.” It opens in theaters Halloween night.

Franzese is the son of the one-time underboss of New York’s Colombo mob. So it was not terribly surprising that Michael chose to follow in his father’s unholy footsteps.

He remembers vividly his induction into La Cosa Notra, which means “This Thing of Ours,” he explained, during an appearance this past summer at Pastor Greg Laurie’s annual Harvest Crusade.

Franzese was escorted into a room dimly lit by candles. A knife was used to cut his finger, symbolizing the blood oath he was to make. A card depicting a Catholic saint was set afire, a warning to the newest member of the Colombo mob that if he ever betrayed the family, he would burn in hell.

With that, the officiant at the satanic-like ceremony pronounced: “Michael Franzese, you are born again into La Cosa Notra.”

Franzese rose quickly within the Colombo family hierarchy, owing to his exceptional prowess as an “earner,” bringing ill-gotten lucre into the family. At peak, he recalled, he was making $8 million to $10 million a week, much of it from a “gas scam” he orchestrated that bilked the government out of excise taxes.

The Colombo family boasted “maybe 115 made guys,” said Franzese. About 100 of those made it by committing a murder. The other 15, including Franzese, made it by being top earners.

Indeed, so prodigious was Franzese that he became a “capo,” mob-speak for captain. That meant he was part of the crime family’s inner circle.

But as the word of God cautions, those that sow the wind, shall reap the whirlwind. And so it was with Franzese.

His mob family turned on him, thinking he was skimming the take from the gas scam. His very own mobster father put out a contract on his life. And federal prosecutors, including U.S Attorney Rudy Giuliani were determined to send him to prison for racketeering.

Franzese eventually was convicted and found himself confined to a 6 by 8 prison cell. And that’s where he was convicted by the Holy Spirit.

A prison guard gave him a Bible. And after initially throwing it against his cell wall, he opened it up and started reading the Word of God, the Book of Proverbs in particular.

“I came to a verse and it just knocked me out,” Franzese remembers. Proverbs 16:7. “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

“I realized,” said Franzese, it was “the first time God spoke to my heart. I really needed to hear that. It really encouraged me. It put me on the pathway to Jesus, who is my hero and my idol in life.”

Michael’s tale of redemption brings to mind the New Testament account of the miraculous transformation of Saul of Tarsus that began on the road of Damascus.

Saul, a persecutor of Christians, became the servant of Christ we know as the Apostle of Paul.

Michael Franzese, the one time mobster, became an evangelist for Christ after completing his prison sentence.

He is living proof of God’s promise to the truly repentant: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”

Hell to Pay for So-Called ‘Christian Swingers’

It never ceases to outrage when those who abide unabashedly and unrepentantly in sin claim to be Christians.

Like the two churchgoing San Diego couples whom we previously wrote about – Will and Shirley and Nate and Faith – whose idea of a small group was a casino gambling ring. They were featured in the documentary film “Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians.”

More recently there was Alexis McGill Johnson, who this past spring became the chairwoman of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s foremost abortionist. Johnson publicly professes herself a Christian but thinks there nothing wrong with killing pre-born babies.

Then there’s the latest example, as recently reported by Barcroft TV (which, we understand, is a top 10 news channel on YouTube): “Bible-thumping,” body-building Florida couple Dean and Christy Parave who supposedly “preach the word of God through swinging.”

“At first I was conflicted,” said Christy, “but the more we looked at it, the more it makes sense to us. I don’t think God would be mad at what we’re doing.”

Indeed, she reasoned, “God put people on the Earth to breed and enjoy each other.” And that’s why she thinks it perfectly acceptable in the eyes of God that she and her husband are swinging with other couples.

And Dean and Christy actually have taken there putative “ministry” to the Internet with a web site that encourages couples, according to Barcroft, to “join in and indulge in their holy promiscuity.”

Well Dean and Christy Parave may delude themselves that they are swinging for Christ – just as Alexis McGill Johnson suggests that God is neutral on abortion, and Will and Shirley and Nate and Faith think card counting is okay by Jesus so long as they use the proceeds for church planting – but what they all are doing is wicked.

Now we are all, everyone, sinners, who fall short of the glory of God. In that we are no different from the swinging Parave couple, the abortionist Johnson and the two gambling couples.

But here’s where authentic Christ followers differ from faux Christians like the Paraves, like Johnson, like Will and Shirley and Nate and Faith: We confess our sins, and the Lord our God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

In contrast, the Florida swingers, the Planned Parenthood abortionist and the San Diego gambling ring think they need no forgiveness because what they are doing is no sin.

But the word of God declares, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Those unabashed, unrepentant sinners have hell to pay.

People’s Climate Change March Defiles the Lord’s Day

Organizers of the so-called People’s Climate March expect more than 100,000 people to fill the streets of midtown Manhattan on Sunday, demanding action on global warming. It promises to be one of the largest cult gatherings in U.S. history.

And it will take place two days before President Obama and world leaders gather for an “emergency” climate summit at the United Nations.

The march is the brainchild of Bill McKibben, a celebrated environmental activist. In May, he issued a “call to arms” in a jeremiad published in Rolling Stone magazine, which exhorted climate change cultists to descend on New York City today.

He characterized global warming as nothing less than “the biggest crisis our civilization has ever faced.”

Such hyperbole is typical of those who accept as an article of faith the fundamental tenet of global warming – that man has dominion over the planet, including its climate, and not the Creator of heaven of Earth.

That includes President Obama, who has prostrated himself before the altar of global warming, declaring in his state of the union address this past January that “the debate is settled. Climate change is a fact.”

That was followed this past May by the Obama administration’s Third National Climate Assessment, which asserted, “Many independent lines of evidence demonstrate that the world is warming and that human activity is the primary cause.”

But there’s an insoluble problem with the global warming narrative promulgated by Obama, by McKinnen and other climate change hysterics: Global warming has stopped.

Indeed, just this past week, we learned that Antarctic sea ice has expanded to a record high level, which shouldn’t be happening under the climate change doomsday scenario.

And, in August, an article published in the journal Science confirmed that there has been an unexpected “global warming pause” since 1999.

Climate change scientists have no plausible explanations for these phenomena. But those of us who are Christ followers know the answer.

It’s God.

And His word declares: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

So let the global warming cultists have their march. Let the rulers of this fallen world have their climate summit.

The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. Including the climate.

Unwed Celebrity Mom Does Breastfeeding Pictorial

Actress Olivia Wilde, glammed up her expensive designer dress, publicly breastfeeding her five-month old child.

Actress Olivia Wilde, glammed up in her expensive designer dress, publicly breastfeeding her five-month old baby.

Actress Olivia Wilde is featured on the cover of the September issue of Glamour magazine. Inside the glossy is an article in which Wilde talks about what life is like for her “being a working mom.”

An article featuring the vacuous ramblings of the newby mom (“I wasn’t going to sacrifice myself because I was becoming a mother,” she told her interviewer) would be unworthy of comment here were it not for the pictorial that accompanied the article.

Or, more specifically, the photo of Wilde sitting in the booth of some Hollywood diner, glammed up in a Roberto Cavalli dress, Yossi Harari earings and Prada heels, publicly breastfeeding her naked five-month-old son Otis.

That’s the Cloud-Cuckoo Land in which celebrity moms like Wilde live. And while most expectant young women know that it’s make believe – indeed, Wilde admits that she doesn’t “really look like that” when baby Otis is suckling her breast – there almost certainly are some star-struck moms-to-be who think Wilde a maternal role model.

But the actress most certainly is not.

And not just because she dressed herself up in an haute couture dress to breastfeed her newborn (who wee-weed on the garment, she confided). Nor also because she has made a mockery of the beautiful act of breastfeeding by her public exhibitionism.

But, more so, because she dares to celebrate the birth of her child outside of marriage. And because she declares that “there’s no definition of the ‘normal’ family anymore.”

Well in Hollywood there may be no such thing as a normal family anymore. But for those who honor God, Who is the same yesterday, today and forever, there was, is and always will be a “normal” family.

And it beings with holy matrimony.

In the best-selling book “Sacred Marriage,” Christian author Gary Thomas, reminds us of why marriage remains the second-most important institution (after the church) in the Christian life:

Because God created marriage as a faithful partnership between one man and one woman. Because marriage is the firmest foundation for building a family. Because God designed sexual expression to help married couples to build intimacy. And because marriage mirrors God’s covenant relationship with His people.

The institution of marriage is under assault in our culture and in our politics, from Hollywood to Washington. Unwed-by-choice celebrity moms like Olivia Wilde are glorified. While the president of United States declares that all should be “free to marry who you love” (which, of course, means homosexual couples).

The defilement of marriage, of childbirth and of family rates among the devil’s greatest triumphs. Those who have fallen into his snares have sown the wind and will one day reap the whirlwind.

Imams Rage as Christ Wins Muslim Converts

Naeem Fazal was born and raised in the deserts of Kuwait. He is the son of Pakistani parents who grounded him and his siblings in Islam.

Naeem moved to the United States after the first Gulf War, following his older brother Mahmoud, who had previously enrolled in Spartanburg Methodist College in South Carolina.

While attending the college, Mahmoud found the Lord. And on a visit to Kuwait to see his family he announced he had converted to Christianity.

Naeem was furious with his brother, cursing him for renouncing the Islamic faith they grew up with. He even went so far as threatening to kill his brother, in accordance with the Koranic punishment for infidels like Ahmed who turn away from the “religion of peace.”

There was tension between the two brothers for a period of time. Nevertheless, Naeem decided he would visit his older brother in the U.S. But, though Mahmoud tried to share the Gospel with his younger brother, Naeem remained unreceptive.

Then an amazing thing happened, Pastor Naeem recounted, in a recent appearance at a Southern California church: He had a supernatural experience with the Lord that changed his life, much as Saul of Tarsus had a life-changing encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus.

As he lay in bed one night, a demonic presence entered his room. It told him, “I’m going to kill you.” Naheem got up and raced down the hall to his brother’s bedroom to ask him what to do.

Mahmoud told his scared-to-death younger brother that he knew but only one name he might call upon that had authority over demons and angels alike, and that was Jesus.

So Naeem returned to his room, sat on his bed, eyes wide open. And he espied another presence, which had chased away the malevolent presence stalking the young man.

“I am Jesus,” said the new, benevolent presence. “Your life is not your own.”

And, indeed, the Lord anointed Pastor Naeem that night to take the Gospel to the Muslim community.

To let them know that the God who created them desires that none would perish, but that all would have everlasting life. And that there is no other name under heaven given among men by which they might be saved besides Jesus.

Pastor Naeem, who in 2006 planted Mosiac Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, is one of the growing ranks of ex-Muslims not only here in the United States, but throughout the world, who have been called into the service of Christ.

They have lifted up their eyes and looked at the fields, and found them already white for the harvest.

And it is because men like Pastor Naeem, author of the recently published book “Ex-Muslim,” are doing the work the Lord has set before them that Islam is losing millions of adherents to Christianity.

Indeed, that mass exodus has been corroborated by Ahmad Al Qataani, president of The Companions Lighthouse for the Science of Islamic Law, which is based in Libya, and which trains imams and Islamic preachers.

“In every hour,” said the Muslim cleric, in an interview that aired some years back on the Al Jazeera news network, “667 Muslims convert to Christianity. Everyday, 16,000 Muslims convert to Christianity. Every year, 6 million Muslims convert to Christianity.”

And that’s just in Africa.

The growing Christianization of the Dark Continent confirms the words of the Apostle Paul: “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” and “every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

The Most Inspiring Christian Since Helen Keller

I’d heard of Nick Vujicic. I’d caught a glimpse of him on Christian television. But nothing prepared me for his recent appearance at my church.

A mighty man of faith, Vujicic delivered one of most powerful, spirit-filled messages I’ve ever heard. I think the Australian-born evangelist the most inspirational Christ follower since Helen Keller.

Keller’s life story was immortalized in the 1962 motion picture “The Miracle Worker.” Born in 1880, Helen was 19 months old when she contracted “brain fever,” as the Keller family doctor called it. She was struck blind, deaf and mute.

Nearly feral as a child, Helen’s desperate family found her a teacher – Anne Sullivan, the miracle worker – who leaned in and, over time, got through to the blind, deaf and mute girl, teaching her to communicate.

One of those with whom young Helen communicated was Rev. Philipps Brooks, who introduced her to Christianity. He was renowned, in his time, for his preaching. He is best known today for writing the lyrics of the famous Christmas Carol, “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

In one of her letters to Rev. Brooks, Helen told the clergyman that, even before she could communicate, she knew about God. She felt His presence in her darkness; heard His still, small voice in her silence.

Helen didn’t know what to call the presence that was always with her. The tender-aged blind, deaf and mute girl had no concept of names. But she knew God.

As an adult, Helen was able to share her testimony with millions of people throughout the world. “The only really blind,” she said, “are those who will not see the truth – those who shut their eyes to the spiritual vision.”

On the other hand, she also said, “Blind people who have eyes know that they live in a spiritual world inconceivably more wonderful than the material world that is veiled to them. The flowers they look upon are the immortal flowers which grow in God’s garden.”

I can’t help wondering if Helen Keller might have been present, in spirit, on that recent Sunday when Nick Vujicic visited my church; if she might have been among that “great cloud of witnesses” of which the Apostle Paul wrote about in his Letter to the Hebrews.

Nick was born 31 years ago with tetra-amelia syndrome, an exceedingly rare disorder that consigned him to a life with no arms and no legs.

By age eight, Nick despaired that he was not like other kids; that there was no happy future awaiting him. And, two years later, he tried to end his misery by drowning himself in the bathtub.

But God had put a hedge around the boy. Nick’s repeated attempts to take his own life failed.

Over the next few years, young Nick was awakened to the Holy Spirit working within him. And, at age 15, he gave his life to the Lord.

By immersing himself in God’s Word, Nick learned that he was not cursed at birth, but “fearfully and wonderfully made.” He learned that his being born without limbs was not purposeless, but “so that the works of God could be revealed” through him.

And the Lord has, indeed, done miraculous works through Nick and his global ministry, “Life Without Limbs,” as the evangelist has traveled throughout the world sharing the Gospel.

Like the time Nick traveled to Mumbai, India. The Holy Spirit moved him to visit the city’s red-light district; to go from brothel to brothel preaching Christ. At one brothel, a woman asked Nick to pray for her sister, an invalid who had not walked in four years.

The woman had previously prayed to her assorted Indian gods. She had bowed before their graven images. She had left offerings. All, to no avail.

So she decided to put the Christian evangelist to the test. “If your God is real,” she challenged Nick, “pray for my sister to walk?”

So Nick prayed aloud, in Jesus’ name. And, lo! and behold!, the woman’s invalid sister stood and walked for the first time in four years.

The women of the brothel were dumbstruck, much like those who witnessed Jesus heal the blind, the lame and the leprous. They repented their lives of sin and declared Jesus their Lord.

Their chains were broken. They were set free. And it was because the work of God was revealed through Nick Vujicic, a man with no limbs, a mighty man of faith.
